HC Deb 11 November 1958 vol 595 c169
9. Mr. Kirk

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, why it is considered necessary to continue at the National Chemical Laboratory the service of providing standard samples of organic compounds.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works (Mr. Harmar Nicholls)

The preparation and supply of standard samples are being continued because they provide a valuable service to industry which needs these materials for the calibration of instruments used in controlling industrial processes.

Mr. Kirk

Can my hon. Friend say how much this service is used?

Mr. Nicholls

Quite considerably. Last year, 709 samples were sent to 67 laboratories; 200 samples to foreign countries, 12 to Australia, and the rest to laboratories in this country.
