§ 38. Mr. Teelingasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why he has not increased the travel allowance beyond £100 for the period November, 1958, to November, 1959, for British subjects going abroad.
§ Mr. ErrollMy right hon. Friend would like to ease the currency restrictions on travel abroad as soon as possible, but he has also to consider other claims on our resources.
§ Mr. TeelingWhile appreciating that, may I ask whether my hon. Friend realises what a bad impression it gives abroad that now, with all the money that we are supposed to have in our present financial position, it is still impossible for the ordinary man in the street or the businessman to get more than £100 unless he receives special permission?
§ Mr. ErrollMy hon. Friend should remember the correspondingly good impression which has been created by our assumption of a number of other commitments.
§ Mr. TeelingWhile fully realising what my hon. Friend has said, but thinking that it ought to be discussed on the Adjournment, I wish to give notice that I hope to have the opportunity of raising the matter again.
