HC Deb 06 May 1958 vol 587 c1017
23. Mr. Lawson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what further measures he is taking to stimulate the extension of sandwich courses in technical education.

Mr. N. Macpherson

The central institutions have been encouraged to expand all their advanced courses in science and technology, both sandwich and full time. In the last two years the number taking sandwich courses has increased from 800 to 1,000.

Mr. Lawson

In view of the fact that in England the number taking these sandwich courses has doubled in the past two years and there are now in England plans on foot for the quadrupling of the present number of courses and students, will the Under-Secretary ensure that we do not fall any further behind England than we are at present in this respect?

Mr. Macpherson

But we are not behind England in this matter. We had a long start on England, and proportionately there are far more sandwich courses in Scotland than in England.
