HC Deb 06 May 1958 vol 587 cc1017-8
24. Miss Herbison

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many nursery schools run by voluntary organisations receive grants from local education authorities; and where these schools are situated.

Mr. N. Macpherson

There are eight nursery schools run by voluntary organisations which receive contributions from education authorities. Six of these schools are in Edinburgh, one in Fife and one in Moray. There is also a nursery school in Banffshire which receives both grant from central funds and a contribution through the local authority.

Miss Herbison

Is the Minister aware that most of those schools cater for children from the poorest homes economically, and will he ask his right hon. Friend to reconsider the decision that has been made in the light of the information which he himself gave us in Committee last week?

Mr. Macpherson

My right hon. Friend has already given an undertaking to the right hon. Member for East Stirlingshire (Mr. Woodburn) to reconsider this matter.
