§ 20. Mr. Hannanasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will state the additional number of recruits necessary to bring the health visitors service up to required strength; and when he will announce his decisions in respect of the recommendations of the Working Party Report.
§ Mr. J. N. BrowneAt the end of 1957, the staff employed in Scotland on health visiting duties corresponded almost exactly with the number recommended by the Working Party. Other recommendations are still being considered in consultation with the bodies concerned, and my right hon. Friend is not yet able to announce decisions.
§ Mr. HannanThe hon. Gentleman is aware that this Report was tendered to the Government two years ago. Is he aware of the growing volume of opinion in medical circles that a strong health visitor service would go a long way to help the prevention of mental illness, which is now one of the principal problems confronting the Health Service?
§ Mr. BrowneYes, Sir; this is an important matter, and we shall try to complete the consultations as soon as possible.
