§ 13. Mr. Pargiterasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what proposals are being considered by the Government of Tanganyika to provide alternative employment for the 6,000 to 8,000 African labourers who will no longer be able to work in the copper mines of Northern Rhodesia as a result of restrictions on immigrant employment.
§ Mr. ProfumoThe Government of Tanganyika expect sufficient employment to be available locally for Africans who might formerly have sought work in the Northern Rhodesia copper mines. Plans have, however, been made to help any who may still wish to migrate for employment by increasing facilities for employment on the Rand.
§ Mr. PargiterDoes the Minister consider that the rate of development in 1405 Tanganyika is sufficient to absorb these additional people who will be constantly available?
§ Mr. ProfumoYes, Sir, I think so.
