HC Deb 04 March 1958 vol 583 cc949-50
18. Mr. R. W. Elliott

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, what major advances the Chemical Research Laboratory has made in research to reduce wastage caused by metallic corrosion.

Mr. H. Nicholls

The Chemical Research Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has discovered corrosion inhibitors for metals in storage and in transit, and also in engine cooling systems such as motor car radiators. The Laboratory has also developed methods of preventing premature failure of tubes in marine boilers.

Mr. Elliott

I am grateful to my hon. Friend for his reply. Is the work on corrosion in the Chemical Research Laboratory limited to specific proposals?

Mr. Nicholls

No. It works on a general basis and gives the benefit of its research to local authorities and to industry generally.

Mr. Woodburn

Would the hon. Gentleman describe this at least as one success of nationalisation?

Mr. Osborne

It needs one, at least.
