HC Deb 10 June 1958 vol 589 cc27-8
58. Mr. John Hall

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many Nigerian students in Britain have been repatriated during the past twelve months; and for what reasons.

Mr. Profumo

Seven, due to mental illness.

Mr. Hall

May I ask my hon. Friend if it is not a fact that a number of Nigerian students have been repatriated recently by the Nigeria Office in London because they have been found unsuitable to continue their training in this country? Can he make representations to the Nigerian Government to ensure that, before students come to this country, their background and general education fits them to get the fullest benefit from the courses they take?

Mr. Profumo

That procedure is adhered to, and my hon. Friend might like to know that the number of Nigerian students who have been affected in this way is not any greater than for United Kingdom students generally.
