HC Deb 10 June 1958 vol 589 c20
31. Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what effect the recent Budget changes in Kenya will have on the prices of necessities.

Mr. Profumo

It is estimated that the value of the commodities entering into the calculations used by the Wages Advisory Board will show a net increase of about 1 per cent.

Mr. Stonehouse

Has the Under-Secretary's attention been drawn to the memorandum produced by the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Nairobi that the cost of basic necessities of low income groups in Nairobi will go up by more than £6 a year as a result of these changes, and is it not disgraceful that these changes should bear most heavily on the low income groups?

Mr. Profumo

I have not had my attention called to that yet, but I will read it with the greatest pleasure.
