§ 32. Mr. Footasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many of the persons now detained on Manda Island 21 have appealed against their detention to the Advisory Committee; and whether he will place in the Library the reasons for their detention furnished to each of those persons prior to their appearance before the Advisory Committee.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydOf the 167 detainees on Manda Island, 102 have appealed to the Advisory Committee. On the second part of the Question, I should be prepared to consider such requests in individual cases.
§ Mr. FootDoes the right hon. Gentleman appreciate that these internees, or nearly all of them, have been in prison for more than five years without any form of trial, and ought not this House to know the reasons why they have been locked up for that time?
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydAs the hon. and learned Gentleman knows very well, a summary of the evidence against them was given to everybody at the time of their detention. They have appealed to the Advisory Committee, which in all cases has recommended their continued detention. I would remind the hon. and learned Gentleman that they are considered to be among the hard core of the Mau-Mau movement. There are administrative reviews of each case at regular intervals.
