HC Deb 10 June 1958 vol 589 c15
60. Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a statement about the recent murders and other acts of violence committed by terrorists in Cyprus.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

In the last two months three United Kingdom members of the security forces and eleven Greek Cypriots have been murdered by EOKA. The Turkish Cypriot terrorist organisation has murdered two members of its own community. Four Greek Cypriots have been killed in clashes with Turkish Cypriot mobs during the weekend. A Turkish Cypriot woman has been murdered in her home and a Turkish Cypriot Auxiliary Policeman has been killed by an unknown gunman. A great deal of other violence and damage to property has been done.

Mr. Biggs-Davison

Is it a fact that a British subject was slowly beaten to death in the presence of his wife very close to a police station, and is my right hon. Friend satisfied that everything is being done to maintain the discipline of the police force, to ensure that full protection is given to Her Majesty's subpects, and that law and order are rigorously maintained at this important time?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

That is indeed one of the major preoccupations of the Governor and of Her Majesty's Government.
