39. Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when the last escapes occurred from Camp K, the Central Prison and other places of detention in Cyprus; who were the detainees who escaped; and which of them had escaped previously from detention, and on how many occasions.

Following is the answer:

Last escapes of detainees from places of detention are as follows:

Kyrenia Castle, on 23rd September, 1955, the following escaped:

Name.

Kokkinotrimithia Detention Camp. On 26th October 1956, the following escaped:

Pyla Detention Camp. Between 13th and 16th March, 1958, the following escaped:

Of the above, Evangelakis and Firillas have been recaptured, and Drakos was shot dead in a gun battle with the Security Forces on 19th January. 1957.

From the Central Prison a convicted terrorist, Polycarpos Georgadhis, previously a detainee, sentenced on 24th April, 1957, 10 life imprisonment for possessing firearms and ammunition, escaped on 1st May, 1958. He bad previously escaped from Kyrenia Castle on 19th January, 1956, was recaptured on 2nd June, 1956; he escaped again from the Nicosia General Hospital whilst undergoing treatment ex-'K' Camp on 31st August, 1956, and was recaptured on 21st January, 1957.
