HC Deb 30 July 1958 vol 592 cc1343-4
27. Mr. Russell

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation how the experiment with linked traffic signals on the Bath Road west of Slough is progressing; and whether he will consider introducing this system on other suitable roads, especially in the London area.

Mr. Nugent

The installation has had the effect of keeping traffic on this road at an even but reduced speed. I am glad to say, that there has also been some reduction in accidents, but it is not possible to compute to what extent that is due to the traffic signals or to the extensive improvements which have been made to the road itself. Variations in signal timings are now being tried and, when sufficient technical information has been accumulated, we will consider if the system is suitable for use elsewhere.

Mr. Russell

Will my hon. Friend consider trying this system on other roads where there is a succession of traffic lights—such as Harley Street and Wimpole Street—where one is apt to get held up two or three times late at night when there is little traffic?

Mr. Nugent

We should like to see the end of this experiment first. There are arguments both in favour and against. It makes for a certain rigidity in traffic movement. We should like more experience before we try this experiment elsewhere.
