HC Deb 30 July 1958 vol 592 c1344
46. Mr. Russell

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what progress has been made with the consideration by local authorities of the sites for car parks in central London chosen by the British Transport Commission.

Mr. Nugent

All the sites were offered to the local authorities concerned, but unfortunately most of them were considered to be unsuitable for car parking, for reasons of position or of cost. One has, however, been leased as a car park to a private operator, and three more are still under consideration.

Mr. Russell

Will my hon. Friend do everything possible to speed up consideration of this problem? Would not he agree that it is complementary to any extension of the system of parking meters which seems to me to be most successful in that part of the West End where it has been applied?

Mr. Nugent

We do what we can to encourage local authorities to develop off-street car parking.
