HC Deb 30 July 1958 vol 592 c1346
34. Mr. Slater

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation when he expects to receive the Report of the Committee on Road Signs; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Watkinson

I expect shortly to receive an interim Report dealing with signs for the Preston bypass. The Committee propose to reserve its final Report until some experience has been gained of these signs.

Mr. Slater

Will not the Minister agree, in view of the inadequate signpost system that we have in many parts of the country, that the time has now arrived when we ought to have a standard signpost which will give proper direction to people who are using the roads, and especially to those hon. Members who are seriously thinking of taking a drive?

Mr. Watkinson

The answer is that the Committee is working at the moment on signs for motor roads. It is that particular aspect to which I have referred in my Answer.

Captain Pilkington

Will my right hon. Friend see that some mileages are included? Is he aware that one can travel a very long way without discovering how many miles it is that one has to go on some of our roads?
