HC Deb 17 July 1958 vol 591 cc1426-7
39. Mr. N. Pannell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will arrange for the classification by countries of origin of immigrants from the Commonwealth and Colonies and of such immigrants that return to their own countries.

Miss Hornsby-Smith

The whole question of the compilation of statistics of migration between this country and other countries—including the countries of the Commonwealth—is still under examination.

Mr. Pannell

Does not my hon. Friend agree that the present situation is most unsatisfactory, and in view of the growing gravity of this problem and the repeated assurances of her Department that the situation is being carefully watched, does not she think it essential that factual information should be obtained without delay so that the situation can be watched with an informed eye?

Miss Hornsby-Smith

The purpose of the examination now proceeding is to acquire the factual information for which my hon. Friend asks.
