HC Deb 16 July 1958 vol 591 c1239
51. Mr. Popplewell

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he will now give an estimate of the date when work will be commenced on the Tyne Tunnel.

Mr. Watkinson

On 9th June, the Tyne Tunnel Joint Committee submitted revised proposals to me for the construction of the tunnel and its approaches. These must be considered in detail before the scheme can be authorised. I cannot yet say when work will be started.

Mr. Popplewell

I appreciate that a great deal of thought must be given to this matter, but could the right hon. Gentleman indicate when he hopes that he might be able to give some further indication to the House on it?

Mr. Watkinson

I am afraid that I cannot, but I am anxious that this work should proceed as soon as the preparatory examination has been done.
