HC Deb 16 July 1958 vol 591 cc1236-7
55. Mr. Hastings

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether his attention has been called to the clouds of finely-divided mud thrown into the atmosphere by heavy motor vehicles in wet weather; and whether he will make regulations to deal with this nuisance.

Mr. Watkinson

The provision of wings or other similar fittings to catch the mud and water thrown up by vehicle wheels is always a statutory requirement. I do not think that the addition of any further regulations would materially improve the situation.

Mr. Hastings

Although I did not fully hear the reply, does the right hon. Gentleman realise that a good deal could be done by properly designed mudguards, and that the inhalation of finely divided mud is not only unpleasant but also unhealthy?

Mr. Watkinson

I quite agree.
