§ 26. Mr. Skeffingtonasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will report on the state of industrial relations in the brewing industry in Dar-es-Salaam in Tanganyika; and what steps the Government of Tanganyika has taken in the matter.
§ Mr. ProfumoA dispute over a wage claim between the Commercial and Industrial Workers Union and East African Breweries, Dar-es-Salaam, led to a strike on 16th April. Attempts at conciliation between the two sides by the Tanganyika Labour Department have been unsuccessful.
§ Mr. SkeffingtonWould the Minister indicate whether the Tanganyikan Government are taking any further steps? Is it a fact that Asian strike breakers have been used at one point by one of the breweries concerned? If that is so, will my right hon. Friend convey to the company concerned how very unwise that is in a country where the maintenance of good relations among all races is so very essential? Is it also a fact that the Asian strike breakers were being paid more money than the actual wage claim of those on strike?
§ Mr. ProfumoI have no information about that, but I am satisfied that the Government did not neglect any opportunity of promoting a settlement and acted throughout with proper sense of impartiality.
