HC Deb 13 February 1958 vol 582 c560
36. Miss Bacon

asked the Minister of Education how many independent schools have been given a direct grant since the reopening of the direct grant list; how much per year has been granted to each of these schools; and what reduction in annual fees this has meant to each fee-paying pupil.

Sir E. Boyle

As the reply contains a number of figures, I will, with permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Miss Bacon

Could the hon. Gentleman give the average figure by which the fees have been reduced?

Sir E. Boyle

The average reduction in fee is £26.

Miss Bacon

Would the hon. Gentleman not agree that if his Ministry has any money to spare, it would be much better to allow that money to be used to improve existing buildings rather than to give a subsidy to the better-off people in the community?

Sir E. Boyle

I do not think I should be drawn on that one.
