HC Deb 03 December 1958 vol 596 cc1165-6
12. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of Labour to what extent the pre-war arrangements have been restored for trade unionists who register for employment at the employment exchanges.

Mr. Wood

The pre-war arrangements for co-operation between employment exchanges and trade union branches in placing their members in employment have continued unchanged.

Mr. Smith

Does that apply to the prewar facilities for signing on?

Mr. Wood

It applies to the kind of facilities where if a local office has no suitable man or woman registered for a particular job then the branch secretary of he appropriate trade union would be asked to submit a name; and, of course, the co-operation works in the reverse direction as well.

Mr. Smith

In the circumstances, though I do not want to press this too hard at this stage, will the Parliamentary Secretary give me an undertaking that he will consult his right hon. Friend with a view to consulting the National Advisory Committee on this matter?

Staff at the employment exchanges to deal with them?

Mr. Wood

As far as I know. I am completely satisfied. If, however, the hon. Member would like definitive information, perhaps he would put down a Question.

The following table gives the information desired:

Mr. Wood

I will certainly talk to my right hon. Friend, but I am not quite clear at the moment what I have to talk to him about.

Mr. Smith

I will talk to the Parliamentary Secretary.
