HC Deb 03 December 1958 vol 596 c1167
14. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of Labour if he is satisfied with the facilities and standards of accommodation in the employment exchanges within the City of Stoke-on-Trent, and with the siting of the Longton Employment Exchange; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wood

I recently visited one of these employment exchanges and am satisfied that their standards of accommodation are reasonable and provide adequate facilities within the City of Stoke-on-Trent for the present and foreseeable needs of my Department. Three of the employment exchanges are in buildings specially designed for the purpose. The Hanley Exchange is in premises suitably adapted.

I think the position of the Longton Employment Exchange is reasonable.

Mr. Smith

What does "reasonable" mean?

Mr. Wood

I think it may be taken to mean "reasonably central".

Mr. Smith

Then will the Parliamentary Secretary reconsider this, after taking advice from the local people, and reconsider the site?

Mr. Wood

I will certainly reconsider it. I was anxious to see how central it was, and I looked at a map. I understand there is a new housing estate, which makes the exchange site a good deal more central than it used to be. I will certainly look at it again.

Mr. Smith

I thank the Parliamentary Secretary.
