HC Deb 01 December 1958 vol 596 c829
26. Mr. Lipton

asked the Minister of Health why no representative of the nursing profession was appointed to the Committee of inquiry into drug addiction.

Mr. Walker-Smith

Because the purpose of the Committee is to give medical advice on the questions referred to them. The Committee will, no doubt, invite evidence from representatives of the nursing profession.

M. Lipton

Apart from the medical evidence that will no doubt be provided by the nursing profession, which knows as much about this matter as many doctors, does not the Minister think it was a rather bad oversight to omit any representative of the nursing profession from this Committee? That would certainly help to assess the value of the evidence submitted and to produce a weft better report.

Mr. Walker-Smith

No. So far from being a bad oversight, it was not an oversight at all. I have explained that the, purpose of the Committee is to make a medical assessment, and, therefore, it consists of medical people.
