§ 9. Mr. Braineasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, what steps are being taken by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research to encourage the use of new methods of single stack drainage in the construction of flats.
§ Mr. H. NichollsThe Building Research Station of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has recently published, through Her Majesty's Stationery Office, a book, "Drainage Pipework in Dwellings". This gives full design rules and details of single-stack drainage, that is the system using only one down pipe, which is suitable for flats up to five storeys high.
§ Mr. BraineCan my hon. Friend tell the House a little more about this? Can he say what savings have been achieved by these new methods? Am I to understand from his reply that there is a limit to the type of building to which these savings can be applied?
§ Mr. NichollsBy using these methods the saving is from £10 to £16 per flat, which is between one-third and one-halt of the cost of the old installation. I said in my Answer that the system had been applied to flats up to five storeys because flats up to five storeys were included in the book. Actually, it can be applied to buildings of eleven storeys.
