HC Deb 22 April 1958 vol 586 cc751-2
8. Mr. Braine

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, what the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research is doing to help builders to build more cheaply and more quickly.

Mr. H. Nicholls

The Building Research Station of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has, over the past few years, been assisting builders to make more use of mechanical plant. Examples are the tower crane and mechanical barrows. This Research Station has also developed a simple method of programming building operations to enable building to proceed more smoothly, quickly and efficiently.

Mr. Braine

Can my hon. Friend say whether any of these methods have been tried out by practical builders?

Mr. Nicholls

Yes, Sir. Builders have co-operated. By using some of the devices to which I have referred there may be a saving of anything from 20 per cent. to 30 per cent. in time, which can be reflected to a considerable extent in prices.
