HC Deb 15 May 1957 vol 570 c379
7. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Postmaster-General if he is aware that the General Post Office buildings in Crown Street, Aberdeen, are over fifty years old and are too small for the postal purposes and facilities required by the city; and if he will state his plans for extension to the premises or for the acquisition of new and larger premises for those purposes.

The Postmaster-General (Mr. Ernest Marples)

Yes, Sir. We plan in two or three years to start an extension to the Crown Street building on the north. The land has been bought.

Mr. Hughes

While thanking the Postmaster-General for that Answer, may I ask him whether he realises that this is a matter of the greatest importance to the business life of Aberdeen? Will he, therefore, shorten the period of three or four years and expedite the work that is to be undertaken?

Mr. Marples

I realise the importance of the matter, but I must say that the planning of this extension was held up for a long time by the local planning authority and not by us.
