HC Deb 09 May 1957 vol 569 cc1151-2
9. Mr. Hastings

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Education what facilities exist for the training of radiographers; and what scholarships are available to candidates regarded as suitable for such training.

Sir E. Boyle

I understand that training facilities are provided by 107 hospital authorities under the National Health Service. Local education authorities make grants to suitable candidates where they think it appropriate.

Mr. Hastings

May I ask the Minister whether he is aware that there are many vacant posts for radiographers in the hospital service, and that this means that the existing radiographers have to work overtime and extra time, with consequent danger to their own health and possible danger to the efficiency of the service? Will he see what can be done to increase the output of students for training for this very important branch of the medical auxiliary profession?

Sir E. Boyle

I am sure that the hon. Member will be aware that questions about the training facilities for and the supply of radiographers is really a matter for the Minister of Health, but I can assure him that the Departments concerned are considering how the training grants should be administered in future.
