§ 23. Mr. Sorensenasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what immediate action he intends to take to 620 implement the proposals of the committee of inquiry into the transport of cattle for export; and, in particular, what steps he proposes taking to impose veterinary examination at embarkation ports.
§ Mr. GodberMy right hon. Friend hopes to make a statement announcing the Government's intentions very shortly. All cattle being exported to the Continent for slaughter are at present examined by my veterinary officers before shipment, and only those fit to travel are allowed to be shipped.
§ Mr. SorensenI take it that the intimation given by the Minister just now is to the effect that the Government will embody the major proposals of the Report of this inquiry in appropriate legislation?
§ Mr. GodberThe hon. Gentleman would not expect me to anticipate the statement which my right hon. Friend will make. My right hon. Friend realises the urgency and hopes to make a statement some time this week.
§ Sir T. MooreHow is my hon. Friend going to handle the problem once the cattle get to the other side and are not under the control of Her Majesty's Government?
§ Mr. GodberAgain, I would ask my hon. Friend to await the statement which my right hon. Friend will make. It will be much better if we discuss the matter in the light of that statement.
