HC Deb 19 March 1957 vol 567 cc198-9
28. Mrs. Mann

asked the Secretary of State for Scotand if he has considered the representations made by the deputation from Lanarkshire on 13th July, 1955, regarding lack of openings for apprenticeships for school leavers throughout Lanarkshire and comparisons made with conditions in England; and what action has been taken in fulfilment of the promise made to that deputation and the hon. Member for Coatbridge and Airdrie.

Mr. Maclay

I have seen the reply that my predecessor sent the hon. Member on 23rd September, 1955. In accordance with the assurances then given, the Board of Trade have continued, with some success, to encourage new industrial development in Lanarkshire.

Mrs. Mann

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what are the actual results'?

Mr. Maclay

As my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour indicated in his reply earlier this afternoon, there has been substantial success in attracting new projects. I am informed that there have been twenty-seven new projects since July, 1955, which should give, in total, employment to over 3,000 people.
