HC Deb 11 March 1957 vol 566 cc794-5
41. Mr. Hurd

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what was the extent of the outbreaks of anthrax in 1956; and whether the sources of infection have been traced.

Mr. Amory

There were 1,245 outbreaks of anthrax in 1956 among animals in Great Britain. In most cases the probable source of infection was imported feedingstuffs.

Mr. Hurd

Can my right hon. Friend say whether imported feedingstuffs, more particularly meat meal, may be a source— the same kind of trouble that we had a few years ago with meat meal from South America?

Mr. Amory

I am not sure. I will look into that and let my hon. Friend know.
