HC Deb 07 March 1957 vol 566 cc518-9
34. Mr. Mayhew

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what instructions he has given to the police with regard to overnight parking of cars in the Borough of Woolwich.

Mr. Simon

My right hon. Friend has given no instructions to the police on this subject, which is a matter for the Commissioner of Police. He has asked the Commissioner to make inquiries into the complaints contained in letters which the hon. Member has forwarded to me, and I shall write to him when these inquiries have been completed.

Mr. Mayhew

Is the hon. and learned Gentleman aware that there is some urgency about this and that quite unnecessarily ruthless and indiscriminate methods have been used against car owners in Woolwich?

Mr. Simon

The hon. Gentleman must not expect me to comment pending the inquiries which are being made. As to the urgency, the letters of complaint were received in the Department only on 4th March, and the inquiry is being pursued with all the speed possible.
