44. Mr. E. Johnson

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what steps are being taken to widen road A.5 between Weedon and Atherstone.

Mr. Nugent

Work is in progress on a diversion at High Cross and on an improvement south-east of Shawell Railway Bridge. My right hon. Friend has also authorised improvements at Buckby Wharf Canal Bridge and near Catthorpe.

Mr. Johnson

While welcoming such improvements as have been made on that road, and accepting the wisdom of the priority laid down by my hon. Friend the other day, may I ask him to bear in mind that this is supposed to be the main road between London and Manchester, and many parts of it are really nothing but country lanes?

Mr. Nugent

We are doing our best to improve it as fast as we can.
