HC Deb 24 July 1957 vol 574 cc413-4
40. Mr. Peyton

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what action he is taking to widen the bridge over the River Yeo on the A.30 road.

Mr. Nugent

I regret that my right hon. Friend has been unable to include a scheme for widening this bridge in our current programme.

Mr. Peyton

Will my hon. Friend bear in mind the fact that this is a really dangerous bridge and has been the scene and the cause of recent accidents? It may have been adequate for the horse-drawn traffic for which it was originally built, but it is fantastically inadequate to bear the volume of traffic on what is still a major trunk road.

Mr. Nugent

I agree that it is a narrow bridge and that it needs widening in due course, but I am afraid it will have to take its turn.
