§ 12. Mr. E. Fletcherasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he has considered the resolution, a copy of which was sent to him, passed by the Islington Borough Council on 21st December, 1956, protesting against the provisions of the Rent Bill which will add to the housing problems in Islington; and what reply he has made thereto.
§ Mr. H. BrookeYes, Sir. I am sending the hon. Member a copy of the reply sent to the Town Clerk.
§ Mr. FletcherIs the Minister aware that I have received a copy of that reply, and find it most unsatisfactory? Is the right hon. Gentleman not now convinced that there is mounting indignation throughout London and the country about the provisions of this Bill which will lead to hundreds of thousands of tenants being turned out of their homes on six months' notice, and will he say when he will announce a modification of those proposals?
§ Mr. BrookeI certainly want to do my best to satisfy everybody, if it is possible; but I feel some difficulty in answering detailed questions about a Bill which has already been referred by this House to a Standing Committee.
§ Mr. MitchisonCan the right hon. Gentleman say if he has any support whatever for the Bill except among members of the Government and certain special interests?
§ Mr. BrookeYes, Sir.
