Mr. John Hallasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what Government-sponsored or assisted student hostels exist in this country; and what amount has been contributed by Her Majesty's Government to the appeal launched by the National Union of Students for a new International Student Centre and hostel in London.
§ Mr. PowellA substantial contribution from Government funds is made towards the cost of establishing and maintaining hostels and other residential accommodation at universities and technical colleges. In addition, the British Council runs students' hostels at London, Edinburgh and Sheffield, and the Government have promised a contribution of E200,000 towards the cost of an International Hall of Residence at London University. No contribution to the appeal launched by the National Union of Students has been made nor, so far as I know, requested.
