HC Deb 14 February 1957 vol 564 cc1430-1
36. Mr. John Hall

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what Government-sponsored or assisted student hostels exist in this country; and what amount has been contributed by Her Majesty's Government to the appeal launched by the National Union of Students for a new International Student Centre and hostel in London.

Mr. Powell

A substantial contribution from Government funds is made towards the cost of establishing and maintaining hostels and other residential accommodation at universities and technical colleges. In addition, the British Council runs students' hostels at London, Edinburgh and Sheffield, and the Government have promised a contribution of E200,000 towards the cost of an International Hall of Residence at London University. No contribution to the appeal launched by the National Union of Students has been made nor, so far as I know, requested.

Captain Duncan

Will my hon. Friend cease using the term "Government funds"? Is he not aware that the Government have no funds except what they raise from the taxpayer?
