HC Deb 14 February 1957 vol 564 cc1422-3
16. Mr. Tiley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will provide for the amendment of the Finance Acts so as to control the tax liability of payments of capital sums now made free of tax as compensation for alleged loss of earnings under service contracts when those contracts are cancelled by agreement.

Mr. Powell

I cannot anticipate my right hon. Friend's Budget statement.

Mr. Tiley

While thanking my hon. Friend for that illuminating answer, may I ask him to bear in mind the fact that we have an enviable reputation in the world as patriotic taxpayers, due to the fairness of our system, and that while these methods of tax dodging are permitted our reputation is in question? Will he advise my right hon. Friend to deal with this tax dodging method speedily and ruthlessly?

Mr. Powell

My hon. Friend has already brought this matter to my right hon. Friend's attention.
