§ 41. Mr. H. Stewardasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he has any statement to make with regard to the railway disaster which took place on Saturday, 9th February, at South Chapel-en-le-Frith station.
§ Mr. WatkinsonYes, Sir. On Saturday morning, 9th February, a freight train ran away down a steep incline and collided with another freight train just passing Chapel-en-le-Frith station. The wreckage block the lines but traffic was resumed yesterday morning. I much regret that the driver of the runaway train and the guard of the other were killed. I know that the House will wish me to express its deep sympathy with the relatives.
I have appointed an inspecting officer of railways to hold an inquiry into the accident.
§ Mr. StewardWhilst thanking my right hon. Friend for his reply, may I 1263 ask him whether he would state what steps were taken to advise the next-of-kin of the casualties in advance of any public announcement?
§ Mr. WatkinsonI am afraid that I cannot answer that question, but I will look into the matter and let my hon. Friend know.
§ Mr. NicholsonIs it the case that the driver and the guard showed great gallantry and devotion to duty, and will my right hon. Friend pay a tribute to them in that event?
§ Mr. WatkinsonWe must await the result of this inquiry, which I hope will show what my hon. Friend has said.
