HC Deb 12 February 1957 vol 564 c1069
37. Mr. Steele

asked the President of the Board of Trade if, in view of the increase of unemployment in the Dunbarton and Vale of Leven area, he is giving consideration to further development of the Strathleven Industrial Estate.

Mr. Erroll

So far as the need for economy in Government expenditure permits, my right hon. Friend will consider suitable applications for the provision of factory space on Strathleven Industrial Estate.

Mr. Steele

The Parliamentary Secretary will, through his previous experience in the Ministry of Supply, know of what is happening in the Clyde area, for instance at Dalmuir, Scotstoun, and at the Blackburn aircraft factory. Will he take what steps he can to ensure that new applications are forthcoming for new works in Strathleven?

Mr. Erroll

Both the President of the Board of Trade and I appreciate the special situation in the district, and I am hoping to get in touch with my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply to learn at first hand about his visit to the Dunbarton area last week.

Mr. John MacLeod

Instead of over-concentrating in the industrial belt of Scotland, will my hon. Friend try to get some of the industry distributed further north, where it is badly needed?

Mr. Erroll

I will certainly not overlook the claims of other parts of Scotland.
