HC Deb 12 February 1957 vol 564 cc1069-70
38. Mr. G. Roberts

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state the numbers now unemployed in the granite quarrying districts of Caernarvonshire, particularly the village of Trevor and what steps he proposes to take to alleviate the position.

Mr. Erroll

On 14th January, the latest date for which figures are available, the numbers unemployed in the Penmaenmawr and Pwllheli employment exchange areas, in which the principal granite quarrying districts are situated, were 132 and 698 respectively. Twenty-seven of these, all in the Pwllheli area, were ex-quarrymen. We are continuing to do all we can to attract new industry to North-West Wales.

Mr. Roberts

Is the Minister aware that the situation in the granite quarrying areas is far more serious than these figures indicate? Will he consider approaching the Treasury with a view to the early implementation of the Agriculture (Improvement of Roads) Act, 1955, which was passed with the consent of all parties two years ago, and which is still a dead letter?

Mr. Erroll

I will certainly look into the suggestion of the hon. Member.
