HC Deb 05 February 1957 vol 564 cc242-3
55. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Prime Minister if he will publish as a White Paper the full text of the speech he delivered at the dinner to the retiring United States Ambassador.

The Prime Minister

No, Sir. I do not think that would be usual. But I was glad of the opportunity to pay tribute to a very distinguished American Ambassador.

Mr. Hughes

Would the full text of the speech reveal that the Prime Minister apologised to the American Ambassador for misleading him during the Suez crisis, and did he express to the American Ambassador our gratitude to the American Government for keeping us out of a disastrous and expensive war?

The Prime Minister

If the hon. Member would read the speech, which was fairly fully published, he would see that it bore no such implication.
