Air Commodore HarveyI beg leave to present a Petition signed by his Worship the Mayor of Congleton and 4,150 other residents of the Borough. The Petition
Sheweth:
That eighteen Gold Coins, 7 James 1 "Laurels" and 11 Charles I "Unites" were found in an old cottage at No. 12, Moody Street, Congleton, on 12th September, 1956, and were declared to be treasure trove by H. M. Coroner on I 10th October, 1956.That despite repeated requests to the Treasury and the British Museum that the Borough be permitted to acquire some or all of these Coins, the whole find was sold to the Grosvenor Museum, Chester.Wherefore your Petitioners pray that the eighteen Gold Coins of the reigns of James I and Charles I which were discovered in Moody Street, Congleton, shall not he allowed to go to a Chester Museum as directed by the British Museum, but that the Ancient Borough where they were found shall be allowed to purchase all or some of them as evidence of an historic local find.And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
