HC Deb 16 April 1957 vol 568 cc1742-3
41. Sir W. Anstruther-Gray

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what will be the first sign visible to the public that the Forth road bridge is under construction; and when this sign will appear.

Mr. Maclay

I am advised that the first work on the bridge itself will be the construction of the suspension chain anchorages and the piers and, as I said in reply to a supplementary question by the hon. Member for Fife, West (Mr. Hamilton) on 29th January, I hope that it will begin in the summer of 1958.

Mr. Woodburn

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this "doubting Thomas" attitude of a prominent supporter of the Government will create some alarm among the public? Is not this a case where some concrete evidence is really necessary?

Mr. Maclay

I am quite certain that my hon. and gallant Friend is no "doubting Thomas," but merely enthusiastic.

Sir W. Anstruther-Gray

Will my hon. Friend bear in mind that many people throughout Scotland are looking forward to giving the warmest welcome to this sign appearing, and that I was anxious that they should have every opportunity of being present to see it?
