§ 28. Mr. Grimondasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he is satisfied with the traffic flow at Chiswick roundabout at the beginning of the Great West Road; and if he will consider making more road space available at the roundabout.
§ Mr. WatkinsonYes, Sir, but this is only a temporary roundabout during the earlier stages of work on the Gunnersbury flyover. The permanent roundabout to be ready by the summer of next year will be about 400 ft. in diameter with a carriageway round it 40 ft. wide.
§ Mr. GrimondWhile thanking the Minister for that reply, might I ask whether it is possible to make the corners of the roundabout a little less sharp? Traffic is frequently jammed for some distance down all the approach roads. Might it not help to mark white lines showing the lanes which the traffic should take?
§ Mr. WatkinsonIf the hon. Gentleman has recently passed the roundabout he will have seen that engineering work is going on along the road. I must say quite plainly that as we go on with the new measures of road construction they will cause some temporary inconvenience to motorists.
