HC Deb 26 November 1956 vol 561 cc1-2
1. Sir J. Hutchison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will give instructions to the British representative to the Permanent Council of Western European Union meeting in London to support Recommendations 5, 6 and 7 as adopted by the Assembly of Western European Union during its recent session in Strasbourg.

The Joint Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. A. D. Dodds-Parker)

These Recommendations are now under consideration by the seven member Governments in the Council of the Western European Union. They have been sympathetically examined by Her Majesty's Government, but it would not be appropriate to say what instructions are being given to the United Kingdom representative.

Sir J. Hutchison

Would my hon. Friend not agree that the events of the past few months have underlined once again the importance of Western European unity?

Mr. Dodds-Parker

Yes, I would certainly agree with what my hon. Friend has said. I can assure him that we will consider these Recommendations with the utmost sympathy.
