HC Deb 01 November 1956 vol 558 c1587
4. Mr. Callaghan

asked the Minister of Education to what extent the eight advanced colleges of technology have been able to secure adequate teaching staff to cope with students who have registered for the new Diploma of Technology.

Mr. Vosper

No courses have yet been approved for the new Diploma and as far as I am aware the colleges referred to are getting the staff they require.

Mr. Callaghan

Will the hon. Gentleman make inquiries into this matter, because I am sure that he realises its supreme importance? Is he not aware—and if he is not aware, will he please find out—that there are difficulties about recruiting staff of the right calibre, and in sufficient numbers, at the salaries being offered?

Mr. Vosper

I have made inquiries particularly about Cardiff. In answer to the second part of the Question, I would say that only a month ago the salaries for these grades of staff were considerably raised. There is a Committee giving urgent attention to recruitment at the present time.

Mr. Callaghan

May I ask why the Parliamentary Secretary thinks that I am referring only to Cardiff?

Mr. Vosper

I did not think so, but I thought that the Cardiff college was a particularly important one.
