HC Deb 20 March 1956 vol 550 cc979-80
14. Mr. Langford-Holt

asked the Secretary of State for War whether the sons of members of the Armed Services, where they are educated at technical schools, are covered by the allowance under Army Council Instruction 578/55.

Mr. F. Maclean

These allowances cover secondary education, including education at secondary technical schools.

Mr. Langford-Holt

Is my hon. Friend aware that a constituent of mine whose son is studying at a radar wireless college has been refused the allowance on the ground that that is not secondary education? Can he say under what circumstances this grant would be made for such education which is, after all, entirely in accordance with the Government's policy on this matter?

Mr. Maclean

These allowances are intended to cover only secondary education. If, as seems probable, my hon. Friend's constituent is applying for a grant to cover further education, it is not our policy to give grants in that realm of education.
