HC Deb 11 June 1956 vol 554 cc26-7
36. Mr. Collins

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food the percentage of total home egg production which is not sold through packing stations; and what would be the approximate annual extra cost in subsidies, at present levels, if all home eggs produced for sale were sold through packing stations.

Mr. Nugent

The best estimate that can be made is that about 26 per cent. of home-produced eggs sold for human consumption do not pass through packing stations. If subsidy at the rate ruling in the financial year ended 31st March, 1956, had been paid on these eggs, the extra cost would have been of the order of £7 million.

Mr. Collins

Will the Minister bring this increase to the notice of his right hon. Friend in connection with the consideration of any proposal which he may be making for the future marketing of eggs?

Mr. Nugent

My right hon. Friend will take into account all considerations that are relevant.

Mr. Willey

Can the Joint Parliamentary Secretary say whether any particularly good purpose would be served if these eggs were brought to the packing stations?
