HC Deb 26 July 1956 vol 557 cc615-6
15. Mr. G. Jeger

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the forthcoming closure of Thorne Colliery, near Doncaster; and what action he proposes to take to ensure the local reemployment of the 2,400 miners involved.

The Minister of Labour and National Service (Mr. Iain Macleod)

I understand that most of the men concerned will be offered a transfer to other pits within daily travelling distance. For any who seek other employment, the facilities of the employment exchange service are available, and I understand that there are substantial demands for labour within that distance.

Mr. Jeger

Does the right hon. Gentleman appreciate that that is and has been going on during the last few days without any intervention or help on his part, and that it covers only able-bodied miners who can work at other pits? Is he aware of the fact that there is a large number of partially disabled older men, for whom his Department must assume responsibility, and will he take special measures to see that they get alternative employment?

Mr. Macleod

We will do everything we can, as the hon. Gentleman knows. This is one of the main man-power deficiency areas, as far as the Coal Board is concerned. In regard to the great number of the workers concerned, it is possible to offer alternative employment. I accept what the hon. Gentleman says, that there will be difficulties during what, we hope, will be a temporary closure of the pit, and my Department will do everything it can to help.
