HC Deb 26 July 1956 vol 557 cc616-7
17. Mr. Collins

asked the Minister of Labour if, during the next five-year period, he will take steps to allow Remploy to carry forward to another year any sums allowed for maintenance which are underspent in any one year; and if, in connection with the annual accounts of Remploy, he will consider allowing a notional sum as a credit in respect to each Remploy trainee who is able to transfer to open industry.

Mr. Carr

Maintenance, as distinct from capital expenditure, is included in the grants for running expenses which are allowed for Remploy in my Ministry's Annual Vote; in accordance with normal procedure any balance unspent cannot be carried forward to the next year. With regard to the second part of; the Question, I doubt if such a scheme is practicable or would secure the results; desired.

Mr. Collins

While appreciating the difficulties arising from the second part of the Question, will the hon. Gentleman ask his right hon. Friend if he will consider publishing each year with the accounts the number of Remploy trainees who have left for industry and the average cost of training trainees?

Mr. Carr

I will certainly consider that. I thought that information was available, but if it is not, I will certainly see whether it can be made available.
