HC Deb 25 July 1956 vol 557 cc395-6
16. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what progress has been made in the plan for a riverside highway from Blackfriars to Battersea Bridge.

Mr. Watkinson

In consultation with my Department, officers of the London County Council and of the Port of London Authority have examined the technical aspects of this plan and have made a preliminary Report which is now being considered.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Does the right hon. Gentleman recollect that he wrote a glowing introduction to a pamphlet on this plan in which he said that he was keenly interested in this bold and far-sighted idea? How soon can we expect his decision on the technical Report which is now in his possession?

Mr. Watkinson

I welcome anybody who has good and new ideas about how to solve London's traffic problems, and I therefore welcomed the initiative which caused this study to be made. That does not mean that I can go further with it until I have had the benefit of the views of the experts. Those are what I am now getting. As soon as I have them I will look at them and announce my decision.
